On February 4, 1986, Pakistan International Airlines Flight 300, a Boeing 747-200 (AP-AYW), landed on its belly at Islamabad Airport after a flight from Karachi. There was nothing wrong with the landing gear; the crew simply forgot to put it down. Fortunately, none of the 246 passengers was hurt. Following repairs made by Boeing, the 747 continued flying for PIA for another 19 years. In 2010, this airplane was purchased by New York-based startup Baltia Airlines, who plans to be the first US carrier to offer nonstop service between New York City and St. Petersburg, Russia. Let’s hope they use a checklist.

After you land a plane like that, how do you move it again? Take off, put the gear down and land again? (ha ha) I’d love to see them hoist it with a crane to cart it off the runway.

“Hey, does anyone have the big dollies? No not those, the BIG dollies!”

You get a crane. Here’s a B1 bomber on the ground. Yes, they forgot too. It’s not an unusual occurrence amongst amateurs, less so on commercial planes although I’m told its surprisingly common for traffic controllers to suggest to the crew that they might like to check the wheels.

I’m so used to the hmmmmmm clunk of the gear going down that I’d probably notice if they forgot then loose my shit. My buddy flies for SWA and his take is that commercial does so many take-offs and landings that they are well praticed. He’s got almost 20 yrs in the air and is still alive.

Reminds me of the time I locked my keys in my trunk. Why were the keys in the trunk to begin with? lol.

Jack it up. There are jacking points in the structure. Picking it up with a crane would probably hurt it.

The US military has done this as well. This C17 ended up with a scrapped airframe as it ground ~8 inches off the bottom of the fuselage. I actually saw the landing gear from this plane at a job I’ve had. We ended up taking it apart to see if anything was salvageable. I don’t think there was much. http://theaviationist.com/2009/02/09/c-1…

I didnt find it now but I seem to remember reading that with this one the pilots’ first indication of a problem was that it was taking a lot of power to taxi off the runway, or something along those lines. That could be heresay but it sure gave the office a good laugh when we saw it.

I wonder what sort of disciplinary action that crew faced. Also:

I don’t imagine they’ve got their wings anymore. If it was me I’d probably have thrown that switch to the correct position after the ‘rough landing’, even though the flight data recorder would probably betray my actions there. Upon seeing it before leaving the airplane I’d probably die of embarrassment otherwise.

They’re probably flying a cargo plane full of rubber dog shit out of Hong Kong.
